Essbase Cloud First Patch

OAC Patch 17.3.1-892

If you were hoping that one of the first items to be updated with the Oracle release of patch 17.3.1-892 was going to be enhancements to the Script interface, you might be upset.  From initial release the scripting is a generic text box, however, it features all the familiar Essbase functions to be used, with no help in building them.  This, of course, isn't the end of the world but seemed to be more of an easier fix to integrate some Calculation Manager interface into the UI.  I was hopeful that this would be addressed in one of the first patches, but no such luck.

You can visit here to get the details of what is included in the patch and I can tell you at first glance, you won't notice much changed and will have to dig in to see the details of what was included.

Here are the contents of what was addressed in the latest patch:

This patch gave me an opportunity to test the capabilities of Oracles new Platform as a Service (PaaS) when patching an environment and I can tell you it was a breeze.  Here is run down of what is going to occur if you haven't done this before

  • They first have you perform a Precheck but don't give much insight as to what is occurring
  • A backup is performed for you with no further intervention
    • I like this a lot as this was a primary concern of applying patching on-premise in having a sufficient rollback plan
  • The patch is applied
One of the downsides is there doesn't appear to be additional logging other than what I show below but hopefully, that will change here in the near future.  Here are some high-level steps of what was performed:

First, you can see the patch that is being applied

After running the Precheck, the following was the result

The patching overall took about 28-30 minutes as you can see
